Dust mites in the mattress: how to reduce them and how often to clean

A mattress used every night builds up dead skin, moisture and dust, the ideal environment for dust mites to multiply. You cannot see them, but they are one of the most common causes of allergies at home.

Why it is not worth putting off

Dust mites feed on skin cells and thrive in warm, humid conditions, exactly what a mattress offers with daily use. Regular vacuuming only removes dust from the surface, it does not reach the deeper layers where mites and their residue build up.

How we do it

  • Vacuum the mattress at least once a week, including the sides and seams, where dust mites concentrate the most.
  • Air the bedroom daily and avoid keeping the mattress permanently covered: trapped moisture favours mite growth.
  • Wash bedding at 60°C whenever possible, as this is the temperature that eliminates most mites and their eggs.
  • Have a professional clean done periodically with injection-extraction equipment, to treat the layers that home vacuuming cannot reach.

Mistakes we see (and avoid)

  • Relying only on a home vacuum cleaner: it removes surface dust, not the mites in the deeper layers.
  • Using scented sprays as a substitute for cleaning: they mask odour but do not reduce mites or allergens.
  • Leaving a mattress untreated for years, even with allergy symptoms in the family.
  • Ignoring room humidity: a humid environment speeds up mite growth, even on a surface-clean mattress.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean my mattress against dust mites?
As a general rule, a professional clean every 6 to 12 months is enough for most households. With young children, respiratory allergies or pets at home, a shorter interval is recommended.
Does deep cleaning solve respiratory allergies?
It helps reduce exposure to dust mite allergens, but it does not replace medical follow-up for a diagnosed allergy. It is a hygiene measure, not a medical treatment.
Are the products used safe for children and pets?
Yes, we use ecological, hypoallergenic products, and anti-mite treatment is included in the mattress cleaning service.
