How to remove urine smell from a sofa or mattress

A fabric spray or air freshener hides the smell for a few hours, but it does not solve what is inside the fabric. For the odour to disappear for good, the cause needs to be treated.

Why it is not worth putting off

Urine leaves uric acid crystals inside the fibres of the upholstery or mattress. With air humidity, those crystals release odour again, even after the surface looks and feels clean and dry. That is why ordinary cleaning products mask the smell instead of removing it.

How we do it

  • Blot the fresh liquid immediately with a dry cloth, without rubbing, to reduce how much soaks into the upholstery or mattress.
  • Do not spray perfume or air freshener directly on the area: it hides the smell for a few hours, but the uric acid crystals stay in the fabric.
  • Mark the affected area clearly, even once it has dried, so the treatment is applied exactly where the problem is.
  • On mattresses, avoid covering the area with a protector before cleaning: moisture gets trapped underneath and the smell gets worse.

Mistakes we see (and avoid)

  • Washing only the sofa cover in the machine: the foam and structure underneath still hold the odour.
  • Using only scented household cleaning products: they do not break down the uric acid crystals, only mask the smell.
  • Waiting for the stain to fully dry without treating it: it becomes harder to locate and treat afterwards.
  • Applying hot water to the stain: it can set the odour instead of removing it.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the smell come back after I clean it with home products?
Regular products clean the surface but do not break down the uric acid crystals inside the fibres. As air humidity changes, the smell returns. That is why we use an enzymatic treatment followed by professional extraction.
Does the treatment work on any upholstery or mattress?
It works on most fabrics. On delicate fabrics we always test a hidden area first before treating the visible spot.
Is it safe for children and pets afterwards?
Yes, we use ecological, hypoallergenic products. We recommend letting the fabric dry fully, between 2 and 6 hours depending on the material and room humidity, before using it again.
