How to remove wine, coffee and grease stains from a sofa

A fresh stain always has a better chance of coming out completely than one that has already dried. The first few minutes decide whether the mark disappears or stays in the fabric.

Why it is not worth putting off

Wine and coffee contain tannins that penetrate the fabric fibres quickly, and grease spreads instead of lifting with water alone. The longer a stain sits and the more heat it gets, the harder it becomes to remove without leaving a mark or changing the fabric colour.

How we do it

  • Blot the excess liquid with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside of the stain inwards, without rubbing.
  • On wine or protein-based stains, never use hot water: heat sets the proteins and drives the stain deeper into the fabric.
  • On grease, blot with paper or a dry cloth first, before any product, because water alone spreads grease rather than removing it.
  • Always test any cleaning product on a hidden area of the sofa, such as the back or under a cushion, before applying it to the visible stain.

Mistakes we see (and avoid)

  • Rubbing the stain in circles: it spreads the affected area and can damage the fabric fibres.
  • Using bleach or chlorine-based products on coloured sofas: the risk of white marks is high and cannot be undone.
  • Drying with a hot hairdryer close to the fabric: it sets the stain before it can be treated properly.
  • Leaving the stain to dry for days meaning to deal with it "later": the longer it sits, the harder it is to remove.

Frequently asked questions

Does a red wine stain always come out completely?
It depends on how long it has been there and the type of fabric. Fresh stains almost always come out; old stains already set by heat may remain partially visible, and we say so before starting.
Can I use baking soda or vinegar at home before calling a professional?
You can blot the excess with a dry cloth, but avoid home-made mixtures on delicate fabrics: they can change the colour of some materials and make later professional treatment harder.
How long does cleaning and drying the sofa take?
The cleaning itself takes between 30 and 60 minutes depending on the size; drying takes between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the fabric and the humidity in the room.
