Portuguese pavement washing (no acids, no ruined stone)

Portuguese pavement is beautiful, and treacherous to clean. It is limestone: acid (the "trick" many people use) eats the stone from within and the damage is permanent. We deep-clean it without acids, with neutral-pH detergent and a rotary cleaner that leaves everything even, without the typical "stripes" of a hand-held jet.

Why it is not worth putting off

Moss and green film are not just ugly: they make the pavement slippery, a fall waiting to happen, especially in the rain. And the longer it is left, the deeper the moss gets into the joints and the harder (and costlier) it is to remove.

How we do it

  • Neutral-pH detergent, never acid (acid corrodes limestone irreversibly)
  • Rotary surface cleaner → an even result, no jet stripes
  • Pressure tuned so as not to loosen poorly-set stones
  • Optional: anti-moss treatment that delays regrowth for months

Mistakes we see (and avoid)

  • Aggressive acid/"stain remover", a quick result today, ruined stone tomorrow
  • A high-pressure jet held up close, loosens the stones and leaves stripes
  • Bleach, stains and weakens the sand joints

Frequently asked questions

Why not use acid, if it cleans faster?
Because the pavement is limestone and acid corrodes it permanently, you win today and lose the stone tomorrow. We deep-clean with neutral pH and the right temperature/pressure.
Won't the pressure loosen the stones?
We adjust the pressure to the state of the setting. On very loose pavement we reduce it and warn you first, we do not "take the pavement apart".
Does the moss come back?
It always comes back in time, but the optional anti-moss treatment delays it considerably. In shaded/damp areas, an annual wash keeps everything under control.
