Brushing your dog or cat before they jump on the sofa helps, but it does not stop fine hair and dander from getting trapped in the fabric fibres over the weeks.
Why it is not worth putting off
Pet hair is fine and has a structure that mechanically locks it between fabric fibres, especially in textured or tightly woven fabrics. Pet dander, on top of that, is one of the most common allergens in homes with pets, and it builds up mixed with the hair in the same areas of the sofa.
How we do it
- Vacuum the sofa with the upholstery attachment, always going in the same direction as the fabric fibres.
- Use a rubber brush or a pet hair glove before vacuuming: it loosens hair that is more deeply trapped in the fibres.
- Brush your pet regularly away from the sofa, which reduces the amount of loose hair that settles on the upholstery.
- For hair and dander that are truly embedded, a professional clean with injection-extraction removes what stays trapped in the deeper layers of the fabric.
Mistakes we see (and avoid)
- Using only a damp cloth to "clean" the sofa: it spreads the hair around instead of removing it.
- Vacuuming always in the same direction without varying it: some fabrics trap more hair if the direction is never changed.
