Wine or coffee stain on the rug: what to do in the first minutes
A glass of wine or a cup of coffee on the living-room rug is one of the most common accidents. What you do in the first minutes decides whether the stain comes out or stays for good.
What to do at once
- Blot with white paper or cloth, pressing from the outside in, without rubbing
- Dampen with a little cold water and blot again, several times
- Lift the rug or put a towel underneath, so the stain does not reach the floor
What never to do
- Hot water: it sets the tannin of wine and coffee in the fibres
- Rubbing hard: it opens the fibres and spreads the stain
- Salt, vinegar or bleach at random: they can discolour, especially wool and coloured rugs
When the stain has already dried
A dry wine or coffee stain has gone into the base of the rug. That is where injection-extraction cleaning helps: it injects the solution and sucks it back out with the dirt, using little moisture, and specific stains are treated with suitable products. On delicate rugs we test a hidden area first. Old stains can lighten a lot without disappearing completely, and we tell you so before we start.
