A home in Porto, near Foz, with two light-fabric modular sofas: a 2-seater and a 3-seater, with the cushions that come with them. From a distance they just looked used. Up close, the seats and arms were covered in rings: circles with a darker outline, one on top of another.

A ring is not new dirt: it is water that wet the fabric, dissolved the dirt already there and, as it dried, left it all at the edge. That is why the outline is darker than the centre. It happens with a spilled glass, a cloth that is too wet or an attempt to clean the stain at home. Every new attempt draws one more circle. We explain this in detail in how to remove stains from a sofa.

Deep vacuuming first, to lift the loose dust from the seams before anything gets wet. Then pre-treatment of the marked areas and the injection-extraction machine: the solution goes into the fibres and is vacuumed straight back out, with the dissolved dirt. It is exactly the opposite of what makes a ring: instead of the water drying in the fabric and leaving the dirt at the edge, the dirt leaves with the water.
Each module was cleaned whole, seat, back and arms, not just the stains. Clean only the stain and you get a patch lighter than the rest, and that patch becomes the next ring. Drying usually takes between 2 and 6 hours, depending on the fabric and how humid the home is.

A 2-seater sofa costs from €40 and a 3-seater €55, indicative price, with no VAT on top; the final price is agreed once we have seen photos and the details. The full table is in how much it costs to clean a sofa in Porto. On a light fabric like this one, it is worth thinking about sofa waterproofing right after the cleaning: the next spilled glass stays on the surface and never gets to make a ring.
