Child's mattress: how to clean wee, milk and vomit without harsh chemicals
2026-09-26 · 2 min read · Impeca
On a child's mattress, accidents are normal: wee at night, milk, vomit. What matters is acting fast and with gentle products, because that is where the child spends ten or more hours a day with their face against the fabric.
Right after the accident
Strip the bedding and blot the liquid with towels, pressing, not rubbing
A damp cloth with warm water and a few drops of neutral detergent, only on the stain
Blot again with a dry towel
Let it dry with the window open before making the bed again
What never to use
Bleach and strong disinfectants: they leave smells and residue where the child breathes
Soaking the mattress: water gets into the foam and takes days to dry, with a risk of mould
A waterproof, breathable protector under the sheet
Two protectors, to swap at night without waiting for the washing machine
Turn and air the mattress when you change the bedding
When to deep-clean
When a stain has dried several times in the same spot, when the smell keeps coming back, or before passing the mattress on to a younger sibling. Old yellow stains get much lighter but can leave an outline, as we show in the real mattress case. On frequency and dust mites, see how often to clean a mattress.
What professional cleaning looks like
