Velvet or microfibre sofa: how to clean it without marking the fabric
Velvet and microfibre are soft and beautiful, but they are the fabrics that mark the most: a drop of water or a brush the wrong way leaves a patch with a different sheen. Cleaning them well is mostly about knowing what not to do.
Day to day
- Vacuum with the soft brush, always in the direction of the pile
- Dust and pet hair: a slightly damp rubber glove passed in the same direction
- Turn the cushions and swap them around, so they wear evenly
What to avoid
- Soaking a stain: on velvet it leaves a lighter ring around it
- Rubbing in circles: it flattens the pile and marks the area
- A hair dryer or heater nearby: heat deforms the fibre
- Chlorine products or harsh stain removers
Check the label
